First published: 27 June 2026Last checked: 12 August 2026General information, not insurance advice

Travel insurance is not one standard product. Policies can cover different risks, use different definitions and contain different exclusions. The correct comparison starts with the policy wording for the traveller, destination, dates and planned activities.

This guide provides general educational information. It does not recommend a specific policy, guarantee coverage or replace advice from a licensed insurance professional. Eligibility and benefits vary by residence, age, destination and policy version.

Four coverage categories to separate

Trip cancellation or interruption

Review which prepaid costs are insured and which reasons for cancellation or interruption are covered.

Travel medical

Check emergency treatment, approvals, payment method, deductible, limits and exclusions.

Medical evacuation

Confirm who decides whether evacuation is medically necessary and where transport may go.

Baggage and delay

Review waiting periods, per-item limits, documentation and secondary-cover rules.

The CDC distinguishes trip cancellation, travel health and medical evacuation insurance, and advises travellers to examine coverage and exclusions carefully.

Check existing protection first

  • Ask the current health insurer whether emergency care abroad is covered.
  • Review credit-card benefits for cancellation, delay, baggage and rental vehicles.
  • Check whether the retreat requires proof of insurance or particular benefits.
  • Record non-refundable payments that need cancellation protection.
  • List every planned activity, including hiking, water activities or vehicle use.
  • Disclose relevant existing conditions according to the application questions.

NAIC notes that each policy sets its own limits and covered or excluded situations, and recommends asking the insurer exactly what the policy covers.

Do not compare policies only by a headline limit or price. Definitions, sublimits, deductibles and exclusions may change the practical value of the cover.

Questions relevant to a retreat

  1. Is the retreat payment refundable? Save the operator’s cancellation policy and payment records.
  2. Are all planned activities covered? Describe activities accurately rather than assuming “wellness” means covered.
  3. How is care paid? Ask whether direct billing is available or reimbursement requires paying first.
  4. What records are required? Keep receipts, medical reports, police or carrier reports where applicable.
  5. Who must be contacted first? Save the emergency assistance number and policy number offline.
  6. Does official travel advice affect cover? Review the policy and destination advice before departure.

US travel guidance recommends checking validity by country, trip length, emergency medical care, medical transportation, existing conditions, planned activities and availability of a 24-hour helpline.

Optional provider starting point

After identifying the required benefits, exclusions and eligibility, inspect the current policy documents rather than relying on summaries copied into an article.

This page does not compare World Nomads or Allianz because no current policy documents for the visitor’s country and trip have been supplied. Those providers can be researched directly, but their products should not be ranked from generic figures.

Plan the connected bookings

Insurance decisions depend partly on the non-refundable trip components. Build the complete cost in the retreat budget guide, save the package terms and use the packing list to keep policy details and emergency contacts available.
