Bali Without a Scooter: Build a Road-Transport Plan

Choose a practical base, confirm airport and retreat transfers, group activities by area and budget for transport without relying on a rented scooter.

Published: 14 August 2026Bali transport planningCurrent services require verification

A Bali trip does not need to depend on a scooter. The practical alternative is to reduce unnecessary movement, choose accommodation around the programme and confirm each road transfer before arrival.

This guide does not endorse a specific transport company, promise fares or provide driving-law advice. Services, pickup rules, availability and insurance terms can change.

Four transport approaches to compare

Provider-arranged transfer

Ask the retreat organiser whether arrival, departure and programme transfers are included, optional or arranged through another company.

  • Get the pickup point in writing
  • Confirm luggage and group size
  • Ask who to contact after a delay

Pre-arranged car with driver

A pre-arranged driver can suit airport transfers, travel between bases or a grouped day route. Confirm the vehicle, price basis, waiting arrangements and payment recipient.

  • Agree on the itinerary before departure
  • Clarify parking, tolls and waiting
  • Keep the confirmation

Registered taxi or verified app booking

For point-to-point trips, use a provider that clearly identifies the driver, vehicle, pickup location and fare or pricing method.

  • Check the identity shown in the booking
  • Confirm the pickup zone
  • Do not assume every location permits the same pickup process

Scheduled or shared transport

Where a current service fits the route, compare its stop, operating information, luggage conditions and last-mile connection with the accommodation.

  • Verify the current operator source
  • Check the final stop
  • Allow for an onward connection

Choose accommodation around the programme

Same property

The simplest arrangement is accommodation, meals and core sessions at one property. Verify whether every advertised activity is actually on site.

Walkable cluster

For independent meals or short errands, verify the actual route, lighting, crossings, terrain and weather exposure rather than relying on map distance alone.

Planned transfers

If classes, accommodation and excursions are separate, list every required transfer and who is responsible for arranging it.

Use the Bali Planning Hub to compare broad area choices and the Ubud vs Canggu guide for two different base styles.

Build the arrival and departure plan first

Before booking the retreat, obtain the exact arrival instructions. A useful confirmation includes the airport or meeting point, pickup zone, arrival window, contact method, luggage details and the next step if the flight is delayed.

The UK government’s Indonesia travel advice recommends researching destinations and obtaining appropriate travel insurance; the safety section also advises using registered taxi companies and checking the driver’s identity.

Calculate transport as a trip category

Fixed journeys

Airport arrival, airport departure and transfers between accommodation bases.

Programme journeys

Classes, excursions or meals held outside the accommodation.

Flexible journeys

Independent meals, shopping, free-day activities and contingency.

Add transport to the full retreat budget before comparing package prices. Do not use an old quoted fare as a guarantee for current travel.

Driving and insurance boundaries

This page is designed for travellers who do not plan to rent a scooter. If plans change, verify Indonesian licensing rules, the vehicle class, rental terms and insurance before driving or riding.

Australian Smartraveller advises travellers to learn local road rules, check the required licence and confirm whether insurance covers driving or riding. It notes that some policies may not cover an accident where the driver lacks an authorised licence.
