Bali in 7 Days: The Slow Way

A flexible route using Ubud and the southern coast as two main bases, with enough space for rest, weather changes and realistic transfers.

First published: 26 June 2026Last checked: 12 August 2026Example itinerary, not a booked package

One week can support a meaningful Bali trip when the itinerary limits hotel changes and treats activities as options rather than obligations.

This route is an editorial planning template. It does not claim to be based on 50 personal trips, reader surveys or medically measured outcomes. Local traffic, weather, ceremonies, attraction access and transfer times can change. Confirm each element shortly before travel.

Route at a glance

Days 1 to 4: Ubud base

Arrival recovery, one cultural visit, one landscape-focused morning and unstructured time.

Day 5: flexible transition

Keep the transfer day light and choose either a direct coastal move or one verified stop.

Days 6 and 7: southern coast

Choose one coastal area and avoid changing accommodation again.

Alternative

If quiet countryside matters more than the coast, replace the southern base with Sidemen after checking transport.

Day 1: arrive and reduce decisions

Arrange the airport transfer before departure and confirm the driver’s meeting instructions. Do not schedule a distant attraction or mandatory class on arrival day. Check in, eat, walk only if practical and protect a normal sleep opportunity.

  • Save the accommodation address offline.
  • Confirm late-arrival or delayed-flight procedure.
  • Keep medication, documents and essentials in hand luggage.
  • Use the first evening to confirm the next morning, not the entire week.

Day 2: Ubud orientation

Choose one local route that can be shortened. A town walk, nearby rice-field path or introductory class may be enough. Check current access, weather, footwear and transport rather than relying on a fixed sunrise promise.

If visiting a temple or ceremony, follow the site’s current dress and conduct requirements. Ask before photographing people or religious activity and do not treat daily worship as entertainment.

Day 3: one cultural activity

Select a single guided activity such as a cooking class, craft visit or cultural site. Verify the operator, meeting point, duration, group size, accessibility, inclusions and cancellation terms. Leave the second half of the day open.

Inspect current Bali activities through Viator after comparing the operator’s live terms. Viator is included here because this itinerary section specifically concerns optional excursions.

Day 4: programme or rest day

Use this day for the main retreat, yoga or wellbeing activity, or keep it unscheduled if the first three days were demanding. A responsible programme should identify its teacher, scope, schedule and cancellation terms without promising medical outcomes.

  • Confirm whether equipment is provided.
  • Check whether participation is optional.
  • Ask about indoor alternatives for outdoor sessions.
  • Do not interrupt professional care or medication because of retreat marketing.

Day 5: transfer without overloading

Move once, from Ubud to the selected southern base. Avoid combining checkout, a long excursion, multiple attractions and another check-in unless the operator has confirmed a realistic route.

A Sidemen stop or alternative rural base can work only when the transport and accommodation plan supports it. For a seven-day trip, adding a third hotel often creates more packing and transfer time than useful depth.

Day 6: coastal day

Choose one activity based on the exact coastal area. Options may include a beach visit, beginner lesson with an identified instructor, cliff walk or cultural site. Check tides, heat, weather, access, transport, physical requirements and insurance implications.

Do not assume scooter rental is necessary. Review licensing, local law, experience, helmet quality, insurance exclusions and alternatives such as a driver or ride service.

Day 7: departure buffer

Keep the final morning close to the accommodation and allow a conservative airport buffer based on current traffic information, airline instructions and the property’s recommended departure time. Avoid an activity with a fixed finish close to check-in.

  • Confirm checkout and luggage storage.
  • Check flight status and airport terminal.
  • Keep receipts and booking confirmations.
  • Leave time for delays rather than optimising every hour.

Use the budget calculator with current quotations. The old daily-cost table has been removed because accommodation, transport and activity prices vary by dates and supplier.

Inspect current retreat extensions

If the itinerary will include a structured retreat, compare current listings only after deciding which nights and activities will be replaced. Do not add a retreat on top of an already full schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Is one week enough?

One week can work when the route limits hotel changes and prioritises a few experiences. It is not enough to see every part of Bali.

Should I include Sidemen?

Only if the additional transfer supports the trip’s purpose. Sidemen can replace the coast or serve as a verified stop, but a third hotel may add unnecessary movement.

Do I need a scooter?

No universal answer applies. Check licensing, experience, local law, insurance exclusions and safer alternatives.

What should I budget?

Use current quotations for accommodation, transfers, meals and activities in the budget calculator.

Should I book a retreat?

Choose a retreat when its schedule replaces part of the itinerary and its teacher, room, inclusions and terms meet the trip’s needs.
