Bali’s Dry Season

A practical retreat-planning guide for weather variability, regional differences, entry requirements, health preparation and outdoor programme alternatives.

Editorial illustration. This image does not represent a specific retreat or guarantee weather conditions.

First published: 26 June 2026Last checked: 12 August 2026Seasonal guide, not a forecast

Bali is commonly described as having a relatively dry period from April to October, but showers can still occur and conditions vary by region, elevation and year.

Use this page to prepare questions, not as a weather guarantee. Check a current forecast shortly before travel and ask the retreat how outdoor sessions, transfers and excursions are handled when conditions change.

What “dry season” means in practice

Relatively less rainfall

The seasonal label describes a broad pattern. It does not mean every day is dry.

Regional variation

Coastal, inland and elevated locations can experience different clouds, rain, wind and temperatures.

Outdoor opportunity

Open-air sessions may be easier to schedule, but every programme still needs shelter and a weather alternative.

Busier periods

Availability and prices can change by dates. Use live quotations rather than old monthly claims.

Climates to Travel describes Bali as tropical and hot year-round, with a rainy season from November to March and a relatively dry season from April to October, while noting that showers can still occur and inland or elevated areas can differ. Review the climate overview.

Plan by region, not only by month

SettingWhat to verify
Ubud and surrounding villagesExact elevation, rain alternative, road access, humidity and insects
Canggu and southern coastHeat exposure, shade, wind, traffic and property noise
Sidemen and eastern BaliTransfer route, local rainfall, programme location and services
Uluwatu and Bukit PeninsulaSun exposure, stairs, wind and transport between venues
Highland or mountain activitiesTemperature, visibility, footwear, operator and cancellation terms

Compare two common bases in the Ubud versus Canggu guide. The exact property matters more than a town label.

Retreat questions for variable weather

  1. Where are classes held? Ask whether the shala is open, covered or fully enclosed.
  2. What is the rain alternative? Confirm the indoor venue and capacity.
  3. Are excursions refundable? Review operator cancellation and rescheduling terms.
  4. How are transfers managed? Ask about road access and delays for the exact property.
  5. What equipment is provided? Confirm mats, towels, refill water and shade.
  6. What is optional? Outdoor activities should not make the programme unusable when weather changes.

Entry requirements

Do not rely on a generic visa-on-arrival price, duration or passport list in a seasonal article. Entry rules depend on nationality, travel purpose and current Indonesian requirements.

Use the official Indonesian immigration portal to identify the appropriate visa and required documents. The official portal also states that travellers must submit an arrival card within three days before arrival. Check official Indonesian eVisa information.

Health and sun preparation

A relatively dry season does not eliminate mosquito-borne or other travel-health risks. Review the latest official health notices, discuss personal needs with a qualified professional and follow current bite-prevention guidance.

The CDC Indonesia traveller page advises travellers to review current health issues and take appropriate preventive measures. Review CDC Indonesia travel health information.

  • Use sun protection suited to personal health needs and planned exposure.
  • Carry water according to activity, heat and medical advice.
  • Use appropriate insect-bite prevention throughout the trip.
  • Do not assume “natural” or “reef-safe” marketing establishes medical effectiveness.
  • Seek professional advice when medication, pregnancy, skin conditions or other health factors are relevant.

Month-by-month planning without promises

PeriodPlanning approach
April and OctoberTreat as transition periods and keep flexible weather alternatives
May and JuneCheck live retreat availability, flights and regional forecast
July and AugustExpect demand to vary and compare current prices and cancellation terms
SeptemberUse current quotations rather than assumed discounts

No month is guaranteed to be perfect, cheap, quiet or rain-free. Decisions should be based on the exact dates, region, programme and current conditions.
